Back in the day....
when Terry actually posted on the Daniel Amos message board, he brought the subject up one time. He told a story from Tony Campolo. Let's not turn this into a pro or against thing against Campolo, but he told this story... I don't remember the whole thing, but the main point was that Tony said to his audience one time "There are children dying all over the world every day, and most of you don't give a sh*t." Then he paused for a few seconds and said "The real sad thing is that most of you are more upset that I said sh*t than that the children are dying...."

I love that bit!
AND I LOVE
TONY CAMPOLO !!!
and I'm not ashamed to admit it. No kidding, I go hear him speak everytime he comes to town. He's the best, he rocks, he's great at presenting the gospel-
--
There are 500,000,000 people suffering from malnutrition
in the world.
And the church has to ask itself some questions.
We have a hundred and eighty billion dollars in this country
wrapped up in buildings. I want to know what the Lord has
to say to a church that wraps up 180 billion dollars in buildings
while children die because they don't have their basic needs met.
All of this to honor some one who said, "I dwell not in temples
made with hands".
The great American sin is piety, because we can become very
pious and never sacrifice. Matthew 25 suggests that Jesus
won't be concerned with our piety so much as with how we
responded to the needs of the poor, and the hurting, and the
oppressed people of the world.
It's about time we get our priorities straight. Shouldn't we take
seriously the words of Jesus when he says, "If any man would be
my disciple let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me."
Read 1 John 3:17
"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need
but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?"
Good question! --Tony Campolo

Not a fan of TC
Oh yeah, that's real mature, isn't it? Takes a man with a doctorate to use that kind of vocabulary, does it? Sorry friends, I'm not that easily impressed.
Let me make this on-topic and say that while I love Terry, I really don't appreciate his occasional use of "colorful metaphors" in a few of the interviews I've read.
Back to the good doctor Tony: I heard him do the same kind of thing when he told an audience at my school, "You people don't give a d*mn about the poor." Not only was he making a sweeping generalization that was patently false and insulting for the people in the audience I knew (including myself), it was obvious to many that it was said just to get shock value.
It's real easy to excuse gutter language for someone who's involved in a darling social cause, isn't it? Don't dare criticize these good-hearted souls if they do something that may grieve the Spirit, because after all their heart's in the right place, eh?
Sorry, to me this is inconsistent at best.

John,
Sorry, I have to disagree with you on this one. Colorful metaphors can have a place in the assimilation of information. True, there is a place to abstain from such language, but I also think that there is a place where such language can add to the contextualization of one's point. I would never use colorful metaphors in one of my Sunday morning messages. However, I read in the Epistles some metaphors that are downright crude at best. Language is very important in all culture, it's the way we communicate and live. I, for one, often use colorful metaphors on this board. Nine times out of ten it's for pure fun and games. In working with street kids, I often use colorful metaphors to communicate. To them it's not colorful metaphors, but their everyday language. Steve Camp used the "s" word in a CCM interview about 15 years ago. So many Christians were appalled. In fact, I believe it was that moment in which his artistic career began to spiral downward. C. S. Lewis was the king of metaphor, and he used a lot of color! Cannot there be a balance and an appropriateness to this? No one is asking you to be a fan of Tony Campolo, but he has done a lot to be Christ and advance His Kingdom.
Just my lost thoughts.

I wonder if he did that intentionally, or if it was his net-nanny?
I once had a friend who had a net nanny installed on their computer, and it was always turning their words into things like that...
something to think about anyway...

I find it very telling that you praise this Terry guy for using the "S" word, yet you mock DeGarmo & Key for using the "J" word. What kind of sick behavior is that? Who do you love? Who do you serve?
