Ok, I am ready to recieve all my hate mail now.

Hate mail? Nah... At least I'm not like that, if you Mountain Dew me off I'll just yell "Kalhoun!" (The song "Virgin Falls"--how can one not love it?)
It's funny that you like "3-legged dog." That's my least favorite off "Real Men Cry."

For me, I think that Kalhoun is the album that was the turning point for Daniel Amos and possibly their most pinnacle album (not to say the best.) Kalhoun was like a total rebirth from everything they'd done before. I think that after we see a few more DA albums come out (I do hope there will be many more to come) that MBD will be seen as another milestone dividing epochs of the band. When it comes to albums that I most play, I'd have to list these (beginning with most):
MBD (their most mature album musically; "Author of the
Story" will be hard to top; half the other songs
are pure classics, and the album plays as an album)
Doppleganger (the image of the Doppleganger and how
everything has a double meaning; "Hollow Man" is just
too inventive a song in terms of sound)
Fearful Symmetry (for the imagery of "The Pool", the
funk of "Neverland Ballroom", and just cuz
"Instruction thru Film" is a cool song)
Kalhoun (everything on this album was different; it's the
first DA album that really made me want to crank my
stereo. The album had a consistent feel from start
to finish)
Let's Spin (sarcasm abounds and it's FUN. I had a tape
of this one and for 6 months listened to it every
single day. Still love this album to this day--on CD,
of course)
Scenic Routes (no other LD album has been able to top
this one. Each song is a gem, the guitars, the vocals,
it's a classic album. I great album for when your
depressed)
Songs of the Heart (the exporation of instruments is
incredible and daring--and it works! "When Everyone
Wore Hats" is a classic)
So those are my picks.

Sorry, I must be behind. What is Lifefest and where will it be? I heard some mention of Sedalia, MO. Will Terry and the boys be there? When? How far is it from St. Louis? Thanks!

I got mine too. Getting the CDs out was a real challenge. It took a razor blade and a very steady hand. When you're a die-hard DA fan desperate to hear anything new from DA, you shouldn't be holding a razor blade and trying to do minor surgery on plastic.
I was expecting the book to be more like the Alarma Bookset--very sturdy. I'd have also liked a track listing for the discs.
I think disk two will have to grow on me. I really like being able to understand the lyrics for once. I've been singing some of these songs wrong for years! (Yes, I'm too lazy to look at the lyric sheets.) On disk 2 I most love the instrumental. But it drives me nuts because I'm certaint that I have heard it before (in a movie, as incidental music for something.) Has anyone heard this instrumental before? Of the new versions, the ones that I really like ar "Sins of the Father" (it's so much more personal and sentimental) and, of course, "When Everyone Wore Hats." This song is a classic and the new version is just so stripped down and simple that it brings out a new beauty (the piano really stands out without being overstated.)
For me, the real gem is disc 3. I love the sentimentality of Terry reading the story and tracks #2 and #6 are great new songs (especially #2.) And the acoustic version of "Turn this off" is amazing--it gives it such a new twist. The interview at the end of the disc was very insightful. I liked getting a current perspective on WEWH.
When I get a chance, I plan to sit down and read the story of Bud and Irma. I love the pictures. It does give it a retro feel.
Well, that's my 2 cents on the bookset.

Just checking up on the "When Everyone Wore Hats" bookset. I can't wait to get this one. The album is great and I'm dying to hear the acoustic versions!
When you put them in the mail, please put a message on the board so we can stop pestering you and we can begin pestering the mail carrier!
Thanks!!

Thread: Moby |

Moby is a great artist. His last album "Play" was a huge success and everyone knows at least one track off the album, if not 5. He licensed out every song for commercial use and got a lot of flack for "selling out." "Play" is an album you can just put on and have in the background or crank it. Some songs are more dancy, others more like etherial meditation. He likes to take samples of gospel music and just build music around it.
The new album "18" is also an awesome album. "We are all made of stars" is the first single and one of my least favorite songs on the album. I like the song, but it's not the album--you can tell he wrote it to be a radio single, not a true "album track." Moby is more mood music. I could see how one would see "We are all made of Stars" as a Vox Humana-esque track...but Moby's coming from different roots, so I don't make that association.
That's my 2 cents. Go by both "Play" and "18." Both great albums!

I'm in total agreement. I say buy things up as soon as they are released (if you consider yourself a real fan.) At first I hesitated to buy "Motorcycle Tracks" and eventualy had to get it on Ebay. I wish I'd bought it when it first came out. I was lucky enough to discover DA/TST/SE when "Let's Spin" and DFBB first came out on CD. I bought every CD and every re-release as they came out. I have no regrets.
True, there are a lot of things coming out at once and they may be a bit expensive to buy in a lump, but better to buy now at this price, than later and pay more!
As far as I'm concerned, TST is the most prolific musician of our time and very consistent with good releases. At the very least, you know that each new release will be something original. It's not like everything sounds the same.
Purchase...and let's help make these guys better known!

Here's a few of my classic faves:
Yes, deeply I have slept / And now I rise as one who has gone down / Into the well springs of new life / Down across the milk white sands / I wade out into the sleepy cove / And bathe in the holy stream / Then suddenly /I shatter the level mirror of the lake
-- The Pool
For me, therefore, everything has a double existence / Both in time and when time shall be no more / Vanity, vanity, all is vanity / And darkness is on the face of the deep / Who has failed, mankind or the church?

Thread: What turned you on? |
|
I first heard a few songs off "Let's Spin" on the radio and ran out and bought The Swirling Eddies' "Let's Spin" on tape. I must have listened to that tape at least 3 times a day. Finally, the Eddies revealed who they were (I had never heard of Daniel Amos.) When I found out most of the band members were associated with a group called Daniel Amos, I looked for any CDs of theirs (I had JUST gotten my first CD player.) I found "Darn Floor, Big Bite." I liked it, but not as much as "Let's Spin." Then I found "Fearful Symmetry." Three songs hooked me and still do to this day: "The Pool," "Neverland Ballroom" and "Instruction Thru Film." "The Pool" was my favorite DA tune of all time till MBD came out and I heard "Author of the Story." DA is a new group with MBD, in my opinion.
Once I was hooked on "Fearful Symmetry" I started looking for anything and everything my DA. I was fortunate enough to get every single DA album as it was reissued for the first time on CD and get every new DA album as it came out.
From the old ones, "Shotgun Angel" is a masterpiece. Side One and Two are excellent! The whole rock opera of Revelations is incredible. It's not just an auditory album, it's visual. I actually see images when I listen to side 2. Then "Doppleganger." The songs and themes from "Doppleganger" have inspired me ever since. When I wrote my play "The Damascus Trilogy" adapting August Strindberg's "To Damascus, I-III" I had the songs and themes of "Doppleganger" in my head. Everything in life has a double meaning...is there anything more profound?
I think "Kalhoun" really struck me as a mature album. The music had truly evolved, and it's still a favorite to put on. "Motorcycle" came out when I was going through tough times. It was my escape CD, my renew CD. I put on headphones, listend to the musical wheels turning, and I could tune out the rest of the world. Still love "Motorcycle."
"Songs of the Heart" just rocks and I CAN NOT WAIT till I get my "When Everyone Wore Hats" book set. I need it! And of course "Mr. Buechner's Dream" is a modern classic. How could that album not have been nominated for a grammy!! How can such great talent be so vastly overlooked in the music industry as a whole. But DA and TST inspire me to push on in my own endeavors as an artist. I may never make it, but I enjoy the process and the challenge to create something beautiful and through it try to capture a glipse of truth, even if it's tainted through my own warped view of the world.
Did I answer the question, or just ramble? Oops!
