hello?! ever heard of the law of supply-and-demand?! i think they still cover that somewhere in jr high (or middle school). if the law of supply and demand is ignored, then followed logically that goes toward price controls because it just isn't "fair" to charge more for something when less copies are available. waaaaahhhh! Baby

Now you are just being very rude, and I will not give the rest of your post my consideration.

I did read, however, the first paragraph.

I understand supply and demand. Let's go back to DVDs as an example...just another media format. Criterion Collection often releases their titles in limited runs, and their prices reflect this. That is why one title can go for $35.99 in some instances. Because it is limited, because there is a high demand for it. I understand supply and demand, sir. And it's not a law. It's just a way to ensure that they make a reasonable profit off of it since it is limited and they aren't mass producing their DVDs like Knocked Up or some mainstream title.

What Criterion does NOT do is jack the price up on the DVD as the stock gets lower and lower. Why? Because they knew going in that it would be limited. They knew going in that there would be a high demand for it. They adjusted the price from the onset to reflect this.

It stands to reason that the powers that be that decide the price of the CDs on the web store understand this and also price their CDs accordingly. They have no quantifiable need to raise the price on the item as the stock gets lower and lower.

So, in reflection...your idea still is not good.

No, no it's not. I appreciate your sentiment...at least I suppose I do. I guess your intent is to either create awareness that the CD is about to sell out or drum up more cash for Terry and the gang. I guess. Or you are trying to make it seem like you are interested in Terry and the gang in getting money out of the rarer items instead of Ebay sellers. Which is appreciated.

But I don't think it's a good idea for the simple fact that it goes against the economics of our society as a whole. I am sure there is an economic term for what you are proposing...the idea that as the stock of a particular product gets lower you start to charge more for it. Unless you are operating Rad Rockers, I don't see where that has a place in the American economic system.

It would be like you going to the store to buy a DVD and you see that now the DVD is $20.00 more than it was yesterday. Why? The store only has five copies left and they used to have a hundred. Now you have to pay more to get it. In what society does that seem like a good idea?

Originally posted by Mountain Fanwhy sit around and bemoan rare CDs going up in price? why not run the store to take advantage of the natural progression of increased prices when supply is running low? makes perfect sense to me.

The only one bemoaning at this point is you. I said go ahead and put your CD set up for sale on Ebay. audiori says you have that right, and people are free to pay what they feel is right for it, he just reminds everybody that the set will come back in stock. Who is sitting around and bemoaning at this point?

And if they did do your pricing plan on the DA 30th Anniversary set, how would that help people who missed out on it? And by your statements, you apparently feel everybody had an equal opportunity to buy a copy in 2006 and for those who didn't lock in on a preorder right away should be forced to pay higher prices as the preorder copies start to run short. Perhaps not everybody shared the same opportunities as you. Perhaps in my analogy above, you couldn't get to the store to pick up the DVD before it was down to the last five copies for reasons beyond your control. You have no idea what was going on for me in 2006 or for anybody else for that matter, and it's none of your business, but to assume everybody had the same chance like you is a bit short sighted.

If Terry wants to put up the three disc edition of DA 30th Anniversary Special, I'd be delighted to bid on his auction because at least I know the money is going back to support him.

That's not to say I wouldn't consider bidding on your auction if you do decide to sell it, but I wouldn't bemoan it if I was outbid by somebody who wanted to pay more.

That is if you ever get around to putting it up.

Wow. And all this because I asked a yes or no question. (Which I think turned into a maybe, but in a different form/not the same track/track order.)

Mountain Fan, if you want to sell your CD, sell it. You're the only one bringing up any moral questions on asking a high price. I felt that a lot of sellers on amazon.com charge extremely high prices. But you have to do what you feel is right.

And if you do end up putting up for auction or whatever, then that will let the buyers decide what the final price is what they pay.

But would it be available to EVERYONE? Or just offered again as preorder incentive? Even as a password protected digital download for preorders, that would let new customers get a chance to get the tracks while the first people who ordered it got the official physical copy that would inevitably be more valuable and unique.

I guess it just depends how the tracks on the third disc would be distributed/handled when they start taking preorders on the re-release?

Will the rare third disc, which was initially only made available to customers who pre-ordered the 2-disc set, ever be issued again, either for regular sale or as a special incentive?

If not (as seems likely), then MF's estimate of the set's value is justifiable, especially since no official numbers have yet been given on how many of those buggers actually exist. It's that third disc which gives added value to the package. The fact that the extremely rare Limited Edition (5,000 copies) 2-CD reissue of T Bone Burnett's original "Proof Through The Night", "Trap Door", and "Behind The Trap Door" is now going for 200 smackers and up lends some perspective, I think.

MF, if I were only a rich man... Crying

1) I missed the part where the poster was trying to sell the three disc...I thought it was the two disc only.

2) Will the third disc be offered again as a new preorder incentive? That is the question...we already got an answer on the two disc. Shoot, even if it was a limited time download available with a password the people got who preordered the two disc when it was released again would be OK by me. audiori?

3) T-Bone does offer some perspective, but so does the promise that DA is going back in print. And I thought about it some more...the set the poster wants to sell is really like the first edition of that print run, so I can understand where that might mean something to a collector. It depends on circumstances and how bad/fast somebody wants the two/three disc set. I don't fault the guy who wants to sell it. These are just some circumstances I would consider before turning over good money for it until we get final word on the future availability of the third disc.

I felt bad for them, but what are you gonna do? It was just bad timing.

I also do not see the point in jacking prices up on something regular. If its a really rare one of a kind piece or something.. fine. But if its a regular album it shouldn't be $200. When it is rereleased, everything there will still be there. I mean its their right to do it, and its fine if someone will pay it.. but I just don't think the sellers should do that to people.

Right. Somebody could take DVDs as an example. An original first edition of a Criterion Collection title, for example, can command a lot of money in the second hand market because it's NOT coming back in print. That same movie re-released by a different studio, even as a two disc special edition, isn't suddenly worth more than the Criterion if it is in print or even if it goes out of print and will come back in print.

But collectors who want the original Criterion will pay a premium. And collectors who want the original Maranatha release of Daniel Amos will pay a premium for it. Personally, I don't see where it automatically makes a two disc edition more valuable, but that's from a collector's POV. Somebody might be willing to pay more for it if they think it's worth that to them.

I don't find fault in the seller for putting up for a high price, if they feel the need to do that. However, I won't purchase it from them.

Or don't complain about it when people charge a lot and someone in the market is willing to pay it. When buyer and seller agree to the transaction it is ultimately fair. Smile

I find it funny that you're still going on about it. If you want to sell your copy, nobody here is stopping you. Sell it for whatever you feel it is worth for you to part with.

I just listed reasons why I don't think it would necessarily necessitate me spending hundreds of dollars to buy your copy in consideration of the reasons I listed.

Do what you think is right, man. Go for it.

There's supply and demand. And the supply IS coming back in stock on this website, for considerably cheaper than the price gouging you are considering. That should have an effect on your perceived supply and demand.

Also consider that for COLLECTORS first editions of media always commands a higher price on the secondary market over re-releases, even special editions. OOP LPs of original Beatles records, for example, will usually command higher prices than later editions of the same. Just for one example. The supply of the original Maranatha Records version of the Daniel Amos CD is going to command a higher price because it's the first edition, it's a collector's item, and it's NEVER coming back in print again by that record company and in that exact same packaged media.

But if you want to put it up for sale somewhere, that's your choice. I won't fault you or blame you if you think you should get more money for it than the OOP original edition. But I've been collecting for quite a while and I know for every seller asking hundreds of dollars for something they consider rare, there is somebody willing to part with the exact same product for a fairer price. And, like you said, it's going to come back in stock. The people who you are selling this to will realize it and take that into consideration before paying more for this than they would for an original edition that isn't coming back in stock. That's not to say you won't find a buyer...obviously there is a market out there for the uninformed and impulsive.

i just checked ... NO "Daniel Amos" CDs on ebay ...

amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B...43371446&sr=1-7
2 available $85, $180.
and it seems it is only for the 1 disc version! Shocked

so, a 3-disc version should be worth a bit more ... or maybe wait until it is available in the webstore again ...

i guess i will have to figure out how to list this thing so i could get a lot for it ... i can wait a few more years to get another copy ...

anyone can PM me if they are serious about dropping this kind of $ to get one of these RIGHT NOW. i will start thinking about what it would really take and listen to it again tonight. Smile

1) amazon.com sellers USUALLY charge exhorbitant prices and if you base your price base off of that, you will be disappointed.

2) Perhaps the DA self titled 30th Anniversary CD isn't currently available on ebay, but there are other markets online to consider. Alibris? GEMM? GEMM has the original CD for $50.00 in EXCELLENT CONDITION

http://www1.gemm.com/item/AMOS-c-DANIEL/...S/GML889575385/

You might want to see what online stores COLLECTORS would look at before throwing hundreds of dollars at an opportunist like you. You can wait? So can I...for a fair deal. Amazon.com rarely offers fair deals, and I get the feeling yours won't be either.

This type of gouging is all the more reason I would like to see a burn on demand service like Mixonic used to sell CDs of this nature. At least I would know if I spent my money there, it would go back to support the band.

I really hope when it looks like it's coming back in stock you offer the third disc again with a new pre order special. I completely missed out on this, and would gladly pay for whatever to get it all.

Just my 2¢ for whatever it's worth:

I am a physical copy kind of a guy, but I do enjoy my MP3s so I can dump a bunch of music on a flash drive and listen to it at work. I value my collection of "evil" five inch CDs. Yes, I do buy a lot of digital tracks, but like another poster said then you have to worry about the expense of backing it up. And I like to back things up at least twice, not once.

Most of what I buy digitally is music by artists I am marginally interested in and to me it's not much different than when I was a kid recording music I was marginally interested in off the radio. For the artists I REALLY like, I seek out the physical product as well. And with CDs, I rip the songs to MP3, but at least my back up is the physical copy of the CD.

If you all chose to re-release the Daniel Amos album as a regular one disc, I would pass. I would pay a hundred dollars and line the pocket of somebody on Ebay to get the deluxe edition before I would pay ten dollars for a single disc.

But I do have another question that delves into a bit of a different area: What is this THREE disc edition I see online of the Daniel Amos Anniversary CD?

I would want the two disc with the extras and bells and whistles.

And print on demand doesn't mean you have to skimp on packaging either. I usually do CDs with four page cover for my personal stuff. Maybe a full book like the Darn Floor Big Bite release might be more challenging, but you can still get a nice CD package with print on demand.

Would CDs on demand ever be considered? 05-19-2009 22:09 Forum: General Discussion

In another thread I started (about Russian download sites and the question of royalties paid to the artists) I got to thinking.... I got just about everything I could find that Terry's hands have touched. Heck, I even just ordered four CDs online a couple days ago that he produced that I just found out about. DA and Terry related projects take up a HUGE chunk of my collection, as I am sure it does for most of us posting on this board.

But...I rarely came across the CDs when they were brand new. I bought the wide majority of them from second hand sellers, because they were out of print.

And, obviously, Terry and the gang never made one thin dime off of those purchases.

(Which is one reason I decided to join the Avocado Club when it was available...just to show my support.)

But it got me to thinking...in today's modern society, why aren't the old and out of print CDs offered online through a burn on demand service which would give the royalties back to Terry and the respective artists involved?

I do see there are products for sale on cafepress.com, but the royalties on there for CDs are awfully low. What about a place like Mixonic? Or surely there must be some other online store?

And then even the two disc special editions could stay in print. And then people wouldn't have to hunt down out of print CDs from Ebay and other places and the band would get more support.

Just a random thought. I am sure people far more intelligent and clever than me entertained this concept before, but I am just curious about the answer.

Again, I meant no offense to anybody, especially Terry. And that price was just lowered...they usually charge more...so I figured it was like a sale.

I was actually quite surprised to see them on there at all. I mean, I love Doppleganger and all...great album...but for all the ones to put up for download on some Russian site they choose that one? It just seems so...oddly random.

I do hope you can get it taken down at the very least, since it's not authorized.

I am going to cast my vote for Motorcycle, though with the bonus Motorcycle Tracks CD it's like a special edition already.

I would just like to add that (IMHO) if a new edition was done of any of the Alarma Chronicles, putting out two disc special editions of each album in one nice box set would be the best thing EVER.

It was a site selling the album for download. A Russian site that, at least according to their legal page, claims "Authors, Artists and other Copyright holders including major labels are paid their fair dues."

I guess not so much with DA, at least!

And I thought Doppleganger was re-released in the Alarma Chronicles book set. But the question makes me ponder...how many of DA's albums are planned for a two disc set?

Doppleganger for only .50¢ 05-15-2009 18:04 Forum: General Discussion

Not a dream, not an imaginary story, not a what if... I found Daniel Amos' Doppleganger online for only 50¢.

It is a Russian download site, and I realize that they are quite controversial. All I know is that they seem to be endorsed by the Russian version of their RIAA (and that's good enough for me!) and that there was some controversy surrounding allofmp3.com years ago but any charges the RIAA were trying to bring up against them were dropped.

I HONESTLY do not believe this is a pirate music site. I am convinced that this site is just as legal as I-Tunes, but the prices are dramatically lower because the royalties paid for music in Russia is considerably lower.

Usually the prices for downloads from this site run at .20¢ per song and about $2.00 per CD so this may be a sale price.

If posting this is a problem, please understand I meant no harm! I figured most people here have physical copies of this CD but it's a good deal if you don't.

I wanted to add that I've purchased music from this site for several years now, and I rarely had a problem but they are fast to respond to the occasional problem I might have (such as not getting to download a song in time.)
