Sleeping by the hearth of the earth household
Content and relaxed before the fire of life
It's becoming like a castle all woven of mist
Disintegrating when I want to grab a hold

Struggle to go somewhere beyond
The earth household, the earth household
Go to the other unknowable side
Of the earth household, the earth household

We chase with the hounds for the meaning of the world
The unattainable meaning of the world
Now I'm gonna run to the other side
Beyond the border land of death I ride

Slip through a tear in the fabric of the world
The earth household, the earth household
Speak the foreign language of a place beyond
The earth household, the earth household

I drink you endlessly toward my hollow heart
And wake at night repeating "How strange, how strange!"
All is touch and vision in a passionate kiss
And life's a drab curtain ready to be raised

Struggle to go somewhere beyond
The earth household, the earth household
Go to the other unknowable side
Of the earth household, the earth household

The earth household, the earth household

We chase with the hounds for the meaning of the world...

I love this song. It is about not quite ever getting to "there." That hunger that wakes you up in the middle of the night. Knowing we are only here a short time and then we die. The joy, madness and suffering that is life.
When ever we think we have a handle on what's going on, it disintegrates like that woven mist that life is. That's part of what the song is about.

It is also about death. (Now I'm gonna run to the other side, beyond trhe borderland of death I ride.) You can tell Terry has been with loved ones as they were dying. I may be projecting here a bit, but here's why.

When my Mom was dying, during the last few week or so of her life she would talk gibberish. She spoke very fast and low. It was like she was already partways gone somewhere else. It sounded like she was speaking a "foreign language of a place beyond." She was slipping through a tear in the fabric of the world.

So to sum up, it's about that search, the running with the hounds. It's also about the hunger for the search for the meaning of life. Lastly it's about dying. I cannot listen to the song anymore without thinking of my own mother's death. Life, death, mystery and the struggle to tie it all together.

"I drink you endlessly toward my hollow heart and wake at night repeating How strange! How strange!" are my favorite lyrics of all time.

Good stuff Dennis. I have often thought this would be a great conversation since DFBB is my favorite CD of all time. The insight you guys are giving me only makes me love it more. That song really puts things in perspective.

Darn Floor - Big Bite

from the album "Darn Floor - Big Bite"
Words and Music by Terry Taylor, Tim Chandler, and Greg Flesch
©1987 Broken Songs (ASCAP)

1: You touch my hair and cheek sometimes
Feel in yourself this flesh and blood
My poor flesh and blood, my poor flesh and blood

I think I met an angel once
But I cannot really know for sure
Do I know you now? Do I know you now?

2: Illuminate my muddled heart
Sweep the shadows from my mind
So I might imagine what you are like
And understand the great design

Darn floor - big bite
You are earth, water and light
3: Darn floor - big bite
Can I ever hope to get it right, can't get it right

I believe I've had a vision or two
Could have been a dream
I guess it could have been a dream
Could have been a dream
I saw the wide world crack where you touched down
And bodies wash up on a mythical shore
Will you save me now? Will you save me now?
In not-quite earth, in not-quite heaven
I'll imitate love like lovers do
In not-quite art, in not-quite living
I'll pray that writing it down is part of loving you

4: Darn floor - big bite
You are twilight, dark and bright
Darn floor - big bite
You are beautiful, terrible terrible sight!
Repeat 1
Darn floor - big bite
You are love, fire and light
Repeat 3, 4
No I can't get it, no I can't get it right
Repeat 2

This one is simple...no man can describe God.

It's about never getting it. Moving through life doing the best you can, but never quite know what you are doing or why you are doing it! There is a lot of anger & frustrastion in this song. There is also a great deal of worship. Praise & asking for understanding! If Terry were born at the right time this could have been a Psalm!

Again there are mentions of mortality and weakness. Also there is the repeated idea that God is a bit dangerous. Wonderful, but someone to be careful around.

This is very honest music. Great stuff! Dreams & visons that do not seem to reveal anything, just add more confusion! Poetry, prayer & cry for help.
"I'll imitate love like lovers do" to me is a very profound and sad line.
It seems to sum up the song for me. Very brave stuff!

Safety Net

from the album "Darn Floor - Big Bite"
Words and Music by Terry Taylor, Tim Chandler, and Greg Flesch
©1987 Broken Songs (ASCAP)

Down to the black bridge of sighs
She drains her head by the river
Bowed to the father of lies
She hangs on the edge of forever

She falls, she gets
Caught in the safety net
She breaks, she mends
In the safety net she starts doubting again

Beneath the watch towers and wire
Are armies that march across frozen ground
You're gonna call me a liar
When I try to tell you what's coming down

I fall, I get
Caught in the safety net
I break, I mend
In the safety net, I start over again
I start it over again

Strung out in the cradle of grace
Wiping the blood from the warm gun
You leave no power or trace
Shot like a bullet to the kingdom come

You fall, you get
Caught in the safety net
You break, but you mend
In the safety net you start living again
I start it over again

Down to the black bridge of sighs
She drains her head by the river
Bowed to the father of lies
She hangs on the edge of forever

She falls, she gets
Caught in the safety net
She breaks, she mends
In the safety net she starts doubting again

Sure its about Grace. I find these lines rather interesting (and reflective of my experience). She bowed to the father of lies, got caught in the safety net, and then once there she starts doubting again. More human fraility and non-understanding Crying

This is the song that seems like it should be the "easy" one to talk about. To be honest I have not really a clue about it. It seems to have some themes of sin and redemption and something "big" approaching (armies that march across frozen ground, but even that is a small part of something "bigger."

There is reference to murder, suicide & idolatry and redemption in a cylical pattern.

It reminds me a lot of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" where the lyrics and music (both hendrix and dylan's version) conjure up all this imagry, but you never can quite place your finger on what the song is about after 17 years of listening to it, the songs meaning still elludes me.

I think it's about sin and eternal security. The safety net is God's infinite grace that catches us even at our lowest point.
