The Birth of Daniel Amos

  • Alex MacDougall once again joins The Way as their drummer. The band releases it's second album on Maranatha Records, Can It Be?. He would leave the Way later this year to join the Richie Furay band. Richie had recently become a Christian and the two were reunited by Al Perkins, who produced the second album for the Way.

  • Dogwood's After the Flood, Before the Fire is released on Home Sweet Home Records. Alex MacDougall plays percussion on the album.

  • Gary S Paxton teams up with Nashville's Paragon Records to form NewPax Records. DA would be signed to NewPax in 1981. Jubal's Last Band becomes Daniel Amos.
While the actual date is not entirely certain, most of our documents and information from the time period strongly suggest it was likely this April 3rd meeting with Maranatha! that resulted with a name change for the band.

  • Marty: "After about a year, we worked up enough courage to go to a Maranatha Music Group meeting. These meetings were where all the bands affiliated with Maranatha or Calvary would meet and share their experiences with each other in the presence of Chuck Smith. It was kind of scary. Here we were with bands like Love Song, The Way, Children Of The Day, Mustard Seed Faith, The Road Home, Karen Lafferty, Eric Nelson, all in the presence of Chuck Smith. Plus, we were the new comers and we didn't know what to expect. No one ever heard of us. Anyway, Tom Stipe asked all the new bands to come up and check in. So we went up to check in and about the same time we went up, Darrell Mansfield came up to check in for his new band. We were still going by Jubal, at the time, so that was the name we were going to give. We told Darrell to go ahead and go first. We didn't want him to hear what our name was; I was embarrassed with the name Jubal. So he told Tom their name was Jubal! I looked at him with my mouth wide open and told him that's what we were called! After checking our list of names, we decided to go with the name Daniel Amos. We went back to Tom and told him we were called Daniel Amos and Darrell Mansfield went back and told him they were going to be Gentle Faith."

Terry: "Daniel Amos was a name that was chosen out of the Bible - the Old Testament. It's the prophets, Daniel and Amos. We were a country band at the time. We thought it would be a little different to put a couple of names together that sounded like an old country gentleman sitting out on the fence, strumming his guitar. Of course, it has caused some problems: 'Who's Daniel and who's Amos?' There's no Daniel Amos in the band." April 7, 1975

  • Daniel Amos (minus Steve Baxter) auditions for Tom Stipe, who was in charge of the Saturday Night Music ministry at Calvary Chapel. Songs performed during the audition included "'Aint Gonna Fight It" and "Love In A Yielded Heart." The hope was to at least be asked to perform on a Thursday. New bands would typically perform on Thursday nights for some time before eventually working up to playing on a Saturday night - which were generally reserved for the more established acts.
Marty: "We rehearsed every day for about a week and I don't think anyone slept.... we played 2 or 3 songs for Tom and he thought we were great! We auditioned for Tom on a Tuesday evening and he immediately booked us for that Saturday night!"
Terry: "So we went down to audition with the hopes that we might be able to play on a Thursday night at Calvary Chapel, and there was another band there that was this sort of rock band that had a whole PA system, and had roadies and the whole thing... and we were just this little acoustic band. These guys played and Tom was very gracious with them but told them that they weren't ready to play... and then we played and he came up and said 'how would you like to play Calvary Chapel?' and we thought... ya'know this was the Carnegie Hall of Christian venues... we nearly fell off our chairs, and we said 'well, what Thursday would you like us to play?' and he said 'no, I'd like you to play Saturday night' - which blew us away."

    April 10, 1975

  • While working carpentry with his dad, Terry has an accident with a skill saw.
Terry: "...I was at my construction job and had a skill saw... it was just a few days before we were supposed to play at Calvary Chapel and it was at the end of the day... and the skill saw kicked back and took my thumb off and part of a finger. So, I played Saturday night with bandages... with these huge bandages on my hand. Which was cool with most people because they thought it was some sort of a slide guitar device..."

    April 12, 1975

  • Daniel Amos performs at Calvary Chapel for the first time.
Kenny Paxton: "I will never forget when Terry, Steve, Jerry and Marty played Calvary Chapel for the first time. It was the first time they had someone play on such short notice, sandwiched in between the main performers. There was no drummer, Marty stood and the other three all sat on stools. The crowd of several thousand went nuts. It was truly awesome."

  • Marty: "We were the first Christian Band at Calvary Chapel to receive a standing ovation."

Terry: "And we got stuck with 'The Christian Eagles' whether we wanted to be or not. And the funny thing is that I had really had a fascination with early country rock and the music of the Byrds. But the other thing is that it happened so fast, our lives virtually changed after we played Calvary Chapel that one night, that we had to go with the simplest thing we did, and that threw us into that country thing. Things went so fast that we really didn't have time until we started sitting down to write and get ready for Shotgun Angel to find our voice. Added to that was the fact that we had this across the board appeal. With just a couple of guys on acoustic guitars, we were essentually easy listening, so Mom and Dad enjoyed us just as much as junior. We were really feeling the thrill of that and got swept away - we were being appreciated, we got to play music full time, we were in good standing with the powers that be in that church and it's whole network, and we were kids, we hadn't really thought it through."

    November 26, 1975

  • Daniel Amos rehearses with Al Perkins for their upcoming recording sessions. Al Perkins made one significant lyric change to one of the band's songs at this time. Steve Baxter's "Love In A Yielded Heart" originally contained a line that said "You can't ball 'till the morning to make it," which was referring to sex. There was a concern about how the line would be received by Christian audiences so the line was changed to "You can't chant 'till the morning to make it" for the recording. Early demos and live recordings include the original unchanged lyric.

Other performers include the Boone Family (Pat, his wife Shirley and their four daughters), Chuck Girard, Gentle Faith, Jamie Owens, A Band Called David, Mustard Seed Faith, Aslan, Karen Lafferty, Parable, Children of the Day, Debby Kerner, Ermoe Rettino, and Erick Nelson.
Daniel Amos performed in the Birdcage theater with Aslan and other artists. Apparently, the owner of the theater wasn't very happy with Knotts Berry and Maranatha booking rock and roll acts and made no attempt to hide his feelings from the bands. (Source: Bill Hoppe of Aslan)

Jim Kempner, who was responsible for booking the musical acts for the show, offered roadie jobs to John Falcone and Ed McTaggart, both formerly of the band Road Home.
Ed: "I was sent to the Bird Cage Theater where Aslyn and Daniel Amos were performing. They (DA) did not have a drummer for live shows. Terry and Steve were big fans of Bill and the Road Home. So as it goes, they asked me if I would like to sit in on a few of their song that night. Why Not? So early the next week they asked me to join the band and so it goes."
